Janis strongly believes in challenging and encouraging her clients to exceed their physical and emotional boundaries through functional exercise, nutritional counseling and custom tailored routines. Her ability to service a variety of clientele stems from her past experience in athletic training for the University of Michigan football team as well as assisting pre and post pregnant women and operative clients making her capable to address the personal needs of many in a professional and educated manner. Janis also enjoys long distance running, tennis, skiing and hiking in her free time.

Brian Bennetti

Fitness Specializations and Interests

A Long Island, New York native, Brian was a collegiate ACHA division 1 hockey player for the Arizona Icecats, and was also a student athletic trainer and student strength and conditioning coach for the Arizona Wildcats. Brian is also a licensed K-12 physical education teacher in both Arizona and Colorado. He has a physical therapy out-patient clinical background along with working with post-operation patients. Brian specializes in sports specific training, general nutrition, weight management, post-operation injury rehabilitation, youth training, abdominal and core training. He enjoys playing golf, tennis and hockey in his free time.

“The CrossFit program has not only had a major impact on my personal level of fitness but has greatly impacted the way I train my clients. We focus on movement patterns instead of muscles, this alone has made CrossFit beneficial to everyone.”


Josh Benton

Josh has been a personal trainer at the Gainey Village since 2000. He is a graduate of Arizona State University with a bachelor’s of science in dietetics.

Danika has been training at the Village for a number of years. She has worked in a physical therapy setting, coached youth activities, and has taught dance. She enjoys working with a wide range of ages and abilities and when it comes to her clients, she strives to make their fitness experience an enjoyable one. Danika stresses the importance of keeping her clients injury free while establishing strength and correcting dysfunctions when possible. She believes in balancing one’s needs and wants when setting and attaining fitness goals.

Nate Davis

Originally from the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, Nate has a bachelor’s of science in kinesiology from the University of Maryland.

Nate is a former power lifter with a national championship in the 181 pound division. He was also an amateur boxer fighting out of Sugar Ray Leonard’s gym in Palmer Park, Maryland. Nate has a broad background from his 13 years of personal training and has worked with competitive professional athletes, seniors in post rehab and everything in between.

Corey Degenstein-Fitness Director

Corey graduated from Minnesota State University-Moorhead with a bachelor’s of science in fitness and operations management and earned a master’s of science in exercise science-human performance from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

Alissa earned her Masters Degree in Sports Biomechanics from Ball State University. Alissa graduated from California State University, Fresno with a Bachelors Degree in Exercise Science.

After graduating Alissa became a Personal Trainer working in Irvine, CA at the Sports Club Irvine until 1998. For the past 15 years, she pursued a new passion and career, and became a Collegiate, Division I Strength and Conditioning Coach. She had the privilege of working at Ball State, The University of Tennessee, The University of South Carolina and The University of Virginia. Her sports involvement and personal interests include competitive swimming and dance.

Leslie comes from a physical therapy background, working alongside a team of great sport injury and rehab therapists. Her love of helping others turned into an interest in personal training. Her main love of training comes from being able to help others in a positive manner, and change lives for the healthier. Her specializations range from injury rehabilitation to competition training. Her personal fitness interests lie in CrossFit competitions and IFBB/ NPC competitions.

Christopher has been a personal trainer at the Gainey Village for 9 years. He has over 14 years of personal training experience and is a graduate of the Equinox Fitness Training Institute in New York City. Christopher specializes in complete body toning, weight management, young adult athlete training, balance, coordination and flexibility training. Christopher has been a Kinesis instructor for 8 years. He teaches multiple kinesis classes every week, including challenging advanced classes. Practicing what he preaches, Christopher has trained hard in the club to broaden his fitness lifestyle outside of the village. In the last year, Christopher has competed in multiple triathlons, completed a Tough Mudder race, and most recently ran his first full marathon in January!

Chris Morrison

Chris holds a bachelor of science degree in movement and sports studies from East Stroudsburg University in Pennsylvania.

Regardless of your skill, your goals can be realized as long as you have the will.

After serving 12 years with the United States Marine Corps, Erik received his Bachelors of Science in Exercise and Sports Sciences and a Masters degree in Kinesiology from the University of Arizona in Tucson.

Erik’s passion for fitness began at the age of 12 with olympic weight lifting and he has been involved in sports as an athlete and trainer ever since. He has excelled in sports performance as an athlete for the University of Arizona and as a competitive Olympic Weight Lifter.
Prior to joining the Village staff, Erik was responsible for designing sports performance and fitness programs at Foothills Sports Medicine and Physical Therapy. He evaluated and tested muscular strength, muscular endurance, and muscular flexibility. In addition to his position with Foothills Sports Medicine Institute, Erik’s career highlights include working as a Strength and Conditioning Coach for the Department of Sports Performance at the University of Arizona in Tucson, as the Strength and Conditioning Coach with the Cleveland Indians professional baseball organization, and as a kinesiological researcher at the Kronos Institute in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Shawn PerottiShawn Perotti

Shawn received his BS degrees in Exercise Physiology and Nutrition from CSU-Chico.

After obtaining his ISSA, ACE, NSCA and RTS certifications, Shawn has been training and influencing people lives well over 13 years.  After working in a variety of settings and gaining extensive experiences in physical therapy and working closely with athletic trainers, Shawn decided to bring all his time, effort and knowledge full circle and pursue a degree in nursing.  Shawn graduated several years ago from Grand Canyon University and became a registered nurse.  While working as a cardiac nurse Shawn decided to really make a difference and become a cardiac transplant nurse and orthopedic specialist in surgery at Phoenix Children’s Hospital.  Amongst all of this Shawn counsels young children and upcoming athletes around the valley at high schools and middle schools in the importance of exercise and proper nutrition.  Shawn specializes in athletes, pre and post-natal women, special needs, geriatric and rehabilitation.  Shawn is currently training for another bodybuilding contest but still finds time to train and help those who want to have a healthier and more fulfilling lifestyle.

Grant Peterson grew up playing competitive sports year round in Denver, Colorado. After receiving his bachelor’s degree he began his personal training career in Southwest Colorado. He recently relocated to Scottsdale, Arizona where he has been training for the Gainey Village going on 5+ years. Grant specializes in helping his clients to reach high levels of fitness through functional movements and variety. He enjoys being highly active and spending time with his friends and family.

John has a strong background in developing corrective, rehabilitative and therapeutic exercise programs to address a wide array of physical pain or limitations. Once any limitations or imbalances are corrected, John will seamlessly transition each client’s program to include more dynamic and functional full body exercises. John is very comfortable with a  wide range of clients, and loves the challenge of developing unique and personalized programs for each client.

From opening day in August 1999 until the present, Winkie has had the opportunity to assist many people with their fitness goals. Winkie’s experience has included working with members of all ages, many of whom have had unique issues which affect their daily living. These included stroke, cancer, pregnancy, handicaps, obesity, muscular and weakness disability. Winkie is a lifelong advocate of keeping active.

Sue is a veteran personal trainer at the Gainey Village, having been here over 9 years. She moved to Arizona in 2000 from the Chicago area where she grew up, went to college and raised her family. Sue has been in the exercise field since 1988 teaching aerobic fitness classes and moved into the training genre in the mid 1990’s. She specializes in working with joint replacement, arthritis, osteoporosis and injury post-rehab clients. Sue has developed the 50/50+ Program for the Village – an ever-changing series of classes designed for ‘Boomers and Beyond’ that focuses on balance, stretching, coordination and strength training.
