LIFE'S BETTER AT THE VILLAGE

Eka Pada Adho Mukha Svanasana

(One Legged Down Dog or Down Dog Split)

Village Clubs Yoga Pose of the Day: Eka Pada Adho Mukha Svanasana

Julia Pearl – Yoga Teacher at Camelback Village

Downward Facing Dog is probably one of the best known yoga poses, and is familiar to most people – including non-yogis! The traditional pose, considered a “resting pose” by more advanced yogis, has numerous variations, including the One Legged Down Dog, or Down Dog Split pose being demonstrated beautifully by Julia in this photo. This variation has many benefits, and is a more advanced variation of the traditional pose. The practitioner extends one leg behind the body, which helps to increase the stretch in the hamstrings and hip flexors. It is an excellent preparatory pose for the more traditional floor splits, known as Hanumanasana.

Down Dog Split can be used to relieve sinusitis and strengthen the nervous system, and also can help with indigestion. Strong & open shoulders, a toned core, elongated muscles in the legs and increased flexibility in the hips are some of the many benefits provided by practicing this pose. This variation is a very typical one found throughout the Flow and Power style classes at all of the Village Yoga Studios.
