LIFE'S HEALTHIER AT THE VILLAGE

How Often should you Dermaplane?

By Cindy Acridge, Lead Aesthetician at Gainey Village Spa

At the Village Spa, we create our monthly facial specials to reflect the season, while making them appropriate for all skin types. The monthly facial includes your choice of dermaplane or microdermabrasion.  Each month, it is our most popular treatment. Many clients wonder how often they should receive this type of facial.

After a facial, it will take about 30 days for dead skin cells to build-up on the surface of your skin again. When this build-up occurs, you might feel the texture of your skin seems a bit rough, dry or dull. Furthermore, when you apply your regular skincare, the skin will not absorb the products as effectively.

How Often Should You Dermaplane?

For this reason, I recommend that my clients see me at least every four to six weeks for a facial with dermaplane. Dermaplane is a very gentle way to remove dead skin cells from the outermost layer of skin called the epidermis. Your aesthetician will use a small scalpel and gently scrape the surface of the skin.  This is one of the safest ways to professionally exfoliate, and there is no downtime following the treatment besides a little redness. As a bonus, vellous hair (sometimes referred to as peach fuzz) is removed. It is not true that removal of this hair using dermaplane will cause it to grow back any thicker or darker than before. Following the dermaplaning, your skin is ready for the rest of your monthly facial treatment which will generally include the following, depending on your skin type:

-Enzyme peel with steam

-Extractions of blackheads and pores

-A deep moisturizing mask to keep the skin’s barrier healthy and hydrated

-Application of a corrective serum, moisturizer/sunscreen, lip cream, and eye cream

-A scalp, neck, and shoulder massage to add for relaxation

A dermaplane facial will give immediate results, and you will leave the spa with smoother, glowing skin. You will also notice your skin will stay dewier, brighter, hydrated, and plump in between treatments by scheduling regular appointments every four to six weeks.
