The Importance of Clean Beauty Products

By Remi Martin, Hair Stylist at The Village

We do our best to create healthy habits most of the time; to eat clean and put things in and on our bodies that are good for us and make us feel our best. “Superfoods” have gone viral. And in 2020, we have the opportunity, and the technological resources, to understand what goes into our bodies internally… but what about externally? We want to give our exterior the same love and attention we give to our interior — not just for physical appearance, but for the “feel good” factor that we all enjoy when we feel and look our best all around! Let’s look at some ideas for clean beauty products for the ultimate health and beauty routine.

Natural Makeup

Many of us get easily overwhelmed when it comes to going to the makeup department or “Big box” beauty and cosmetic stores. There’s a good reason for that! There are hundreds of brands and a cream, or bottle, or salve, for nearly every part of the body. ou may ask yourself, “Where do I even start?” An important starting point is to ask “What’s ‘in it’ that is going to give me the results?”

When looking for a new product, consider the source, ingredients, and how it was made before next considering the results on the skin or hair. People seeking health and beauty are focused on clean foods, and they should also focus on clean beauty products for the skin, hair, and body. We are exposed to so many things in our daily lives we have no control over like toxins, pollution, etc. However, what you purchase and choose to put in and on your body is an area in your life where you can take control.

Products We Recommend

There are three companies we recommend that take the above mentioned as their first priorities — and the results are in their products.

First up: Jane Iredale. This skincare company was a pioneer in perfecting the amazing mineral natural makeup technology. It was skincare first, and then makeup. But ultimately it was created to protect the skin after full facial laser surgery. Iredale wanted to go outdoors but had no skin to protect her face (yikes!) and also did not want to scare people. So, Jane married the two… and “I do!” Mineral makeup was born.

The company tests their minerals over and over for bacterial growth so the mineral makeup can’t be contaminated. The line also ultra protects with UVA and UVB and is backed by the American Cancer Society.

Another big advocate of clean beauty is Eminence Organic Skin Care. The products they cultivate and use are so pure — the company grows everything in Sweden in a huge organic garden all with ultra-organic real products. In fact, they are so real, you can spell them all (and even eat some such as blueberry and coconut)! I even asked if I could eat them and the educator said, “Sure!” However, I still have never made a meal of it. The company won’t pack their products in anything that isn’t 1,000 percent biodegradable and good for Mother Earth.

And who doesn’t love a fresh mani or pedi? Dazzle Dry Nail Polish is a local company that has created an absolutely amazing polish that is one of the fastest-growing in the industry. It was even voted by Forbes Fortune 500 as one of the top ten most innovative products. One reason is because it dries in FIVE minutes! Wowza!  Like, put-your-socks-and-tennis-shoes-on type of dry! But the best part is what’s not in the product — including formaldehyde, one big word that can do lots of damage. It is poison, especially considering one of the most porous places on the body is the nail beds. Yikes! Check out these products and rest easy at night knowing you are using the cleanest beauty products in the industry and you chose them!! Run to one of our Village Spas and indulge yourself in an all-Eminence Facial, a Pedi or Mani featuring Dazzle Dry Polish (bring your timer if you really want to test its timely magic!), and get color matched or schedule a make-up lesson with the amazing Jane Iredale natural makeup today!

The Benefits of Jade Rolling

By Julie Bloom, Ocotillo Village Aesthetician

After our rooftop event for the Spa at Ocotillo Village, I was inspired to offer more knowledge on jade rolling. I had so many inquisitive guests asking, “what does jade rolling do?” Jade rolling has many benefits for skin health! Continue reading to find out just how amazing jade rollers can be for your skin and how a night under the beautiful Arizona sunset sky brings newfound friendships, gratitude, and youthful luminous skin.

The rooftop spa party started with a mindful meditation moment of gratitude with the incredible life-changing yoga instructor, Mary. Guests dined on wine and snacks including jaw-dropping cookies. They chatted amongst the lighted cactus lanterns making new friendships and telling life stories. Even a golden retriever joined us in the fun.  As the desert sunset sky slowly turned dark, we were lit with celestial stars above and twinkling patio lights. The energy between all of these people was beautiful and soaring with goodness while guests meet their wonderful spa therapists to receive treatments all throughout the night.

During the guest’s spa sessions their faces were toned, removing any residual makeup and were offered a choice of 2 serums providing a drink of water for the skin or natural botox.

Benefit 1 – Calm & Soothes

The first sensation my guests felt was a cooling sensation. This can be a little jarring at first but quickly warms up from your body temperature. Some areas on the face may feel colder and that is usually the areas of the face that have thinner skin and less fat known as adipose tissue. Because jade rollers cool and calm the skin, they are great post-treatment or when the skin is aggravated. For example, after a chemical peel or if you get sunburned or post extractions or when you have an inflamed breakout.

Benefit 2 – Releases Lymph

Jade rollers release stagnant lymph. Lymph is the fluid that flows through a very delicate system called the lymphatic system. If the lymph is not released, it can cause stagnation, or a buildup of toxins, in the skin cells. We often see this as puffiness under the eyes and dark circles. Moving this lymph through is important to release stagnation and can be helped with the small side of a jade roller which is about an inch long. The lymph is located just under the skin and is very delicate. In order to move lymph, extremely light pressure is needed.

Benefit 3 – Reduces Fine Lines

Jade rolling helps smooth out fine lines and wrinkles by circulating blood flow in the face. Fresh blood circulation helps stimulate collagen production and gives the skin a healthy, luminous glow. Massaging the face with a jade roller also helps with facial muscle tone.

So, How Do You Use a Jade Roller?

Simply leave your jade roller in the refrigerator at home until ready for use.

For the eyes, I recommend starting at the inner corner of the eye and moving the lymph through to the outside of the eye and then down through the neck for release of lymphatic drainage. For the face, starting in the center of the face and gliding the roller outward helps release toxins. By gently rolling, the jade roller pushes the lymph through helping to release the stagnation of toxic buildup. For the neck, start at the jawline and move the roller in a downward motion.

If you have any questions about jade rolling, feel free to contact the Spa at Ocotillo Village. We’d also love to see you at our next rooftop spa event. Happy rolling!

7 Trending Hairstyles That Are Post Workout Approved

By Molly Cerreta Smith

When you’re at the Village Health Clubs and Spasgetting your workout in, you may think to yourself “gym hair, don’t care,” but once the workout is done and start your day, you’ll want a trendy style to show off. Here, we check out the latest trends in hairstyles — and easy ways to wear your hair after a sweaty gym session.

Bobs are Back— A perfectly blunt bob can be both cute and flirty and sleek and sophisticated. For those with long hair that rely on a ponytail during a workout, keep in mind the length of the bob before you cut your locks to ensure you can still pull it all the way back when you hit the gym.

Center Parts— No longer synonymous with black-rimmed glasses and a stack of books, the center part has graduated! This sultry look combined with subtle waves or stick straight locks can go from office to happy hour to a night on the town. After the gym, apply some anti-frizz cream to smooth any fly-aways for a straight look, or tousle the hair with some texturizer to achieve that relaxed wavy result.

Fringe-y Bangs— Think a modern take on Bridgette Bardot. Messy, long bangs that have texture can be paired perfectly with a post-gym high ponytail for a fun and flirty look that will last all day long.

Messy Buns, Top Knots, and Banana Buns— Can we get an amen that these hairstyles seem to transcend trends through the seasons! Whether slicked back, parted in the center or on either side, or with tousled strands hanging down, the messy bun might just be the most forgiving hairstyle out there — there are no rules. Top knots can be sleek and sexy or totally undone, but they must be right on top of the head and sky high! Banana buns are a newer trend in buns that call for a low, twisted style at the nape of the neck. Whichever style you choose, rock that post-gym bun with sass!

Hair Accessories— More good news for gym rats: Headbands, bows, and scarves are a hit this season, which makes for easy styling after a heated cardio class. Imperfect hair can still look classy and styled with the proper use of a statement hair accessory!

Half-up, Half-down— Another forgiving hairstyle, half-up, half-down looks can be sophisticated, loose and whimsical, or sleek and straight. This style can even be combined with a mini bun or top knot. Get creative!

Pixie Cuts— The ultimate no-muss, no-fuss hairstyle, the pixie cut is so versatile and requires little effort. For those that prefer a minimalistic beauty routine after a workout session to get on with their day, a volumized pixie cut fits the bill.

Regardless of how you rock your locks this season, hairstyles are a fun way to express your individual style. Have fun creating looks that work for your daily routine and provide a signature style that is uniquely you!
