Running used to be something I dreaded. I couldn’t understand how anyone found it enjoyable. I’d go out for a jog with no real plan, feel awful, and give up. But one day, I made a decision: I signed up for a half marathon and committed to figuring it out.

What happened next surprised me. Running helped lower my stress, clear my head, and gave me a new way to stay active—anywhere. If you’re curious but unsure where to start, here are the five tips that helped me make running part of my life.

1. Start Slow and Short

Forget speed. Forget distance. Your first goal is just to get moving without burning out.

  • Run for 15 minutes or less

  • Stay in “Zone 2” (60–70% of your max heart rate)
  • Focus on time on your feet, not performance

This approach builds your aerobic base and helps your body ease into the demands of running.

You don’t need to run every day. In fact, consistency > intensity when you’re just starting out.

  • Begin with 2 runs per week
  • Pick days/times that work with your schedule
  • Combine short runs with warm-ups before strength workouts
  • Add more days once it feels easy—not before

Running on empty is not a badge of honor—it’s a recipe for burnout.

  • Stay hydrated and consider an electrolyte drink if it’s hot
  • Post-run, grab a mix of carbs and protein to help with recovery

4. Find a Running Buddy

Running solo can be peaceful, but it can also feel… boring. A running buddy makes a huge difference.
