1. Stress Reduction

Massages are generally performed to reduce muscle tension. They provide a break from the pressures of daily life. Cortisol, sometimes referred to as “the stress hormone” is reduced during a massage. Levels of serotonin and endorphins are increased, helping to regulate mood, leaving you with a more positive outlook. Massage sessions often allow for emotional release, providing comfort for those dealing with anxiety, depression, or grief.

2. Improved Circulation

Massages improve circulation by stimulating blood flow. Specific techniques like friction, kneading and effleurage (a circular stroking movement used in most treatments) generate heat and pressure to the muscles. This causes blood vessels to widen, creating more blood flow and improving the delivery of oxygen to tissues. This in turn helps flush out lactic acid from the system and clears out the lymph system.

3. Boosted Immune System

Receiving regular massage treatments has been shown to increase the production of white blood cells. These cells are a core component of the immune system that help identify and destroy harmful bacteria and viruses. Massages can also reduce blood pressure for up to seventy-two hours.

4. Increased Flexibility

Most massage treatments incorporate stretching techniques. Done regularly, this can increase range of motion. By loosening tight muscles and fascia, elasticity is improved which can lead to increased range of motion.

Scar tissue can tend to restrict movement. While massage won’t truly “break down” scar tissue, it can help to soften and mobilize collagen. This promotes scars to better integrate with surrounding tissue, allowing for less restricted flexibility.

Regular massages work on tendons and ligaments to improve elasticity and length and also reduce inflammation to keep joints more mobile.

5. Better Sleep

Massage increases the production of melatonin, the hormone that signals the body to sleep. It also triggers the parasympathetic nervous system, slowing heart rate and deepening breathing signaling to your brain that it’s safe to rest. Studies have shown the massage can reduce the symptoms of insomnia and restless leg syndrome to help break the cycle of sleeplessness. Incorporating Aromatherapy oils like lavender can enhance these benefits.

Massage can be a big part of your comprehensive wellness plan when performed alongside practices like regular exercise and meditation. It is a great way to foster emotional balance  and a holistic approach to a healthier, more balanced life.
